Caldor Fire Updates
The fire is still active near the Little Round Top area, as well as Desolation Wilderness by Pyramid Peak. Additionally, smoke plumes could still be seen coming up from near Trimmer and Saxon Creek this week and fire fighters remain engaged in suppression efforts in the Basin. We continue to update the Caldor Fire page on our website based on the most recent information that we have from the USFS regarding closures and rebuilding efforts, so please keep an eye out there for the latest.
Please stay out of the fire scar area and anyplace where heavy equipment/fire crews are working. It is extremely dangerous within the fire scar and anytime the public is seen in there, crews that are working on hazard tree mitigation or fighting the fire must be diverted to remove them. This just slows down the rehabilitation as well as the area reopening. There are two LTBMU closures in place right now and details about each are below.
Caldor Fire Closure
This closure is set to expire 12/31/2021. The closure includes the entire fire scar within the Basin as well as all areas impacted by fire suppression efforts (dozer lines). We are working closely with the forest service to rehabilitate areas outside the fire scar so we can hopefully get those areas opened earlier this fall.
Backcountry Area Closure
This closure order is set to expire 10/20/21. This was an earlier order that was extended, as the fire is still active near Meiss Backcountry Area as well as into Desolation Wilderness.
El Dorado NF Caldor Closure
The El Dorado NF just released a new refined closure order that expires 3/31/2022. This replaces the previous entire forest closure order, although most areas near South Lake Tahoe remain closed. Please click the link above for more details.
Help with repair to dozer damaged trails
We are getting permission from the LTBMU to have volunteer days in very specific areas of the closure area (outside the fire scar) so we can help get spots repaired and hopefully get some closed trails re-opened sooner than 12/31/21. We are currently flagging trail alignments as well as restoration areas with USFS staff and will release volunteer days shortly. Please keep an eye out on TAMBA’s events calendar and social media for more details.
October 7 Fundraising Event: [Re]Building the Future
Our community has a big vision for the future of trails in Lake Tahoe. Especially now with trails damaged by the Caldor Fire, TAMBA needs your support to rebuild, expand, and connect multi-use trails throughout the region. Join us for an outdoor evening of inspiration and libations on the shore of Lake Tahoe.
Trailwork Continues on the North Shore
Since the forest reopened on the north shore, our awesome crew leaders have been busy clearing downed trees from our recent strong wind events.
Our friends at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association are working on a re-route near Painted Rock this weekend.
