Organizational Overview

The Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) is a dynamic, volunteer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to the development, maintenance, and advocacy of over 200 miles of multi-use trails in the picturesque Tahoe basin. Committed to creating a thriving trail network, TAMBA actively engages with the community, provides education to all trail users, and organizes enjoyable community events. In collaboration with key land managers such as the USDA Forest Service, Nevada State Parks, California State Parks, and the City of South Lake Tahoe, TAMBA plays a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the mountain biking experience in the area.

Position Overview 

As a Board Member at Large, you will be an integral part of TAMBA’s “Working Board,” contributing to both the governance and operational aspects of the organization. This position is pivotal in ensuring TAMBA’s short and long-term sustainability by actively participating in the implementation of foundational policies, practices, and tools essential to the organization’s maturity. Board Members are expected to engage in traditional governance and oversight while also taking a hands-on approach to support the execution of key initiatives as the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Governance and Oversight:

• Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes.
• Monitor and evaluate TAMBA’s progress toward organizational goals.
• Approval of annual budget, tax, and other legal filings, including incremental spending.
• Uphold and advance TAMBA’s mission, values, and ethical standards.

Implementation of Policies and Practices:

• Actively participate in the development and implementation of organizational policies.
• Collaborate with fellow Board Members to establish effective practices that enhance TAMBA’s efficiency.
• Support the integration of tools and technologies that contribute to organizational effectiveness.

Community Engagement & Donor Development: 

• Represent TAMBA at community events and engagements.
• Foster positive relationships with stakeholders, partners, and the broader community.
• Act as an ambassador for TAMBA, promoting its mission and initiatives.
• Identification and development of key donor and fundraising opportunities.

Advocacy and Partnerships:

• Advocate for trail access and sustainable outdoor recreation policies.
• Strengthen partnerships with land managers and other relevant organizations.
• Contribute to efforts that positively impact the mountain biking community.

Qualifications:

• Genuine passion for TAMBA’s organizational mission and goals.
• High ethical standards in integrity in financial and general matters.
• Ability to commit an average of 15 hours a month to attend board meetings, and financial committee meetings, and perform associated duties.
• Demonstrates leadership experience ideally as a board member or in a senior management role.
• Understanding of non-profit governance principles and best practices.  
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with fellow board members, staff, donors, and external partners.
• Experience in fundraising and resource development is a plus.

Time Commitment:

Board Members are expected to commit to monthly 2-hour board meetings, strategic planning sessions, and other relevant events. The time commitment may vary but is estimated at approximately 10-15 hours per month.
