Position Summary:

The Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) is seeking a passionate and dynamic Tails Director to take our trail operations to the next level. 

The successful candidate will do this by developing project management systems and frameworks, ensuring contract and regulatory compliance, tracking and forecasting financial performance, and coaching and mentoring field staff to improve communication, transparency, accountability, and efficiency in our operations. We are looking for someone who cares deeply about creating high quality multi-user trails.  This person must be organized, an excellent communicator, strategic thinker, fiscally responsible, and detail oriented.  This position will help effectively manage TAMBA’s trail building and maintenance programs.

The Trails Director reports directly to the Executive Director in a full time salaried (exempt) role. The position is based in the Tahoe Basin, and requires travel throughout the area.

This position is funded through donations and grants; therefore, development is an essential part of the position. The Trails Director will be a leading representative for TAMBA and must positively represent the organization to the community—with members,  partners, stakeholders, agencies, funding entities, and at public events. Interested candidates should have a serious interest in mountain biking and trail maintenance and development.  Candidates must be enthusiastic about promoting trail projects relating to mountain biking in the Tahoe region. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide supervision and quality control for all TAMBA-led trail maintenance and trail construction projects.

Develop and maintain an effective and collaborative working relationship with the Board of Directors, staff, and partners. 

Prepare invoices for fee for service or grant-funded projects.

Develop and maintain estimates vs. actual reports for projects

Development and regular updating of trails department annual budgets and revenue forecasts

Review and check coding of expense reports.

Provide input related to project financial and administrative performance during projects

Hire, train, mentor and supervise a 4-6 person seasonal trail crew.

Develop new trail projects in coordination with land managers, agency representatives, partner organizations, government officials, staff and board members.

Prepare Requests for Proposals (RFPs) related to trail planning, maintenance, and construction projects. 

Manage subcontractor administration (obtaining quotes, developing scope of work and schedule, developing contracts, obtaining insurance certificates).

Implement the TAMBA five year strategic plan to appropriately sequence trail projects in conjunction with the Executive Director, Board, and other key stakeholders.

Compile monthly and annual metrics and reporting for staff, the board and land managers.

Foster constructive partnerships with land managers, partner trail organizations, and funding organizations. 

Work with the Outreach Coordinator and other staff to plan resources and volunteer personnel for ongoing trail projects. Including facilitation of trail workdays with paid contractors, volunteer crew leaders, and land manager trail crews. 

Initiate and support the development and enhancement of a cadre of skilled volunteer crew leaders and volunteers through training and team building.

Together with the Outreach Coordinator develop and lead regular classes to teach sustainable trail construction and maintenance practices to support volunteers and Crew Leaders.

Ensure the continuous improvement and use of safety systems and Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

Oversee the purchase, allocation, inventory, inspection, maintenance, and storage of TAMBA’s tools.

Assist in fundraising efforts through grant writing, reporting, events, and other activities to raise funds for TAMBA’s mission.

Provide regular content for TAMBA website, newsletter and social media platforms.

Job Skills and Experience:

Minimum of 5 years professional trail planning, management, layout, building, and maintenance experience

Team player: all of our work happens through strong partnerships with land managers, project funders, volunteers, and TAMBA staff.

Detail oriented and organized: the small details are what make projects successful and trail experiences special.

Communicator: timely, clear, and effective communication with staff, land managers, board members and volunteers.

Holistic view and environmental perspective: Familiarity with ecological principles and plants and animals found in the Tahoe Basin.

Strong work ethic: high integrity, relentless drive and enthusiasm, and a desire for long-term employment. 

Grant writing and reporting experience 

Experience with volunteer and paid trail crew management 

GIS experience and ability to produce suitable quality project maps

Understanding of local land use permitting, NEPA and CEQA. 

Basic understanding of federal, state, and local laws regarding wildlife protection, sensitive species considerations, stormwater protection, and related regulations.

Extensive experience working with public land management agencies (i.e. federal/state/local)

Experience teaching and coaching others in all aspects trail maintenance and trail construction

Passionate about mountain biking and outdoor trail-based recreation

Strong organizational, leadership and management skills

Clean driving record and valid driver’s license

Flexible work schedule (days, evenings, weekends)

Self-motivated problem solver

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office, CRM software, GIS, mapping programs, and related applications

Spreadsheet skills and comfort with complicated project estimating, cost tracking, financial forecasting, and budgeting situations.

Excellent document preparation, communication, and writing skills.

Ability to hike or bike longer distances in varied weather conditions.

Must be able to carry 50 lbs

Can hike 10-12 miles within a day on a trail

Can hike up to 7 miles cross country to identify and layout trail alignments

Capable of biking over 20 miles in a day

Able to carry all gear, water, and food necessary for a work day in the backcountry

First aid and CPR certified, or able to get certified

 

Benefits (subject to change):

This is an exempt position with a salary range of $65k – $75k depending on experience. 

Health insurance and 401k with match (after qualifying period) offered with this position.
